An izakaya is a type of Japanese restaurant, which along with food serves mainly Japanese alcohol such as beer, shochu, whiskey, and mixed drinks.
A distinct quality of an izakaya is the food. Izakayas typically serve Japanese dishes which pair well with alcohol. Part of the fun of izakayas is the shared experience of eating and drinking, and typically you will order dishes to be shared by your whole table. These dishes tend to be quite affordable, and popular orders include edamame (soy beans), french fries, or fried chicken. If you feel like a treat then you could go for a sashimi plate!
If you are dining with a group of friends or colleagues, it is also customary to order a multi-course menu. Course menus typically have 8 to 10 courses and include 2 to 3 hours of all-you-can-drink. You can expect to pay 3,000~5,000jpy per person.
In recent years, izakayas of different styles and themes have become popular. Examples include izakayas with Western cuisine, or izakayas with private rooms. Of course, you can always find traditional izakayas too. Whatever you choose, you’re guaranteed a good time!
